"Beyond Structure" vs "Beyond Structure - Part 2"

"Beyond Structure" is a fun but intense two days, that covers hundreds of techniques that are essential for all writers, whether they are professionals or just starting out.

These techniques address people's unconscious; they're not noticed by audiences or novel readers. These techniques are some of the most profound keys to the magic of screenwriting and fiction.

There used to be a "Beyond Structure - Part 2." It was sometimes called "The Advanced Class," although it wasn't really more advanced that "Beyond Structure," but rather had additional material.

It was phased out 6 years ago, but a number of David's former LA students have requested that he bring it back, and so he's doing so, for one time only. It will be held on Thursday, May 1 - two days before "Beyond Structure" in Los Angeles.

Don't miss this rare event.

Part 2 Contents:

There is no overlap between the contents of "Beyond Structure" and "Beyond Structure - Part 2." Here are some of the contents of Part 2:

1. "Plot Deepening Techniques" -- In "Beyond Structure," we cover many ways to give a feeling of emotional "depth" to Characters and to Scenes. But we don't have time to address how to do this for plots. If you ever want to write a movie with the emotional depth of "Philadelphia" or "Lord of the Rings," or create any story which has emotional depth, these techniques are essential.

2. "Layer Cakes" -- How to give layers to a relationship between two characters, so that, in just a watching them converse for a minute or two, we get the feeling they've known each other for a long time, and we sense the complexity of that relationship.

3. "Suspense Techniques." How do you keep the audience on the edges of their seats if you're writing a "soft" movie like "When Harry Met Sally, "Philadelphia," or "Jerry Maguire" -- or during a "slow portion" of an otherwise fast-moving script?

4. "Three Story Models" There are 3 completely different ways to tell a story. Once you really understand these three story models, you'll see exactly what makes some of those Academy Award winning scripts so great. It's David's favorite part of the class. Your mind will be blown.

5. "Theme Techniques." What is a theme? Lots of people use the word, but when you really drill down and try and to get them to explain, you'll find how confused they really are about the subject. Partly that's because there are three different types of themes. In the hands of a skillful writer, themes are powerful tools that can be used to bring both unity and depth to a story.

6. "Chemistry Techniques" -- Amateur writers will create characters that just "happen" to be friends or "happen" to fall in love, or fall in love just due to sexual attraction. But in fact, there are dozens of actual techniques you can use to make the audience or reader feel that two people belong together as friends or lovers. These techniques can also be used when you're writing about a group of friends and you want that group to come off really feeling like a "group." Ditto for when you're writing about characters in a family.

7. PLUS - Other goodies not mentioned above.

History of "Part 2"

David Freeman writes:

I stopped offering "Part 2" 6 years ago because I only allowed people to take it if they'd taken "Beyond Structure." And so the groups were much smaller than the numbers of people who attend "Beyond Structure." Well, my career took off, I got busy, and I retired the class.

Last fall, a big group of my London students who had heard about "Part 2" asked me to revive the class, and I did - for one time only in London. Then some of my LA students heard of that event, and they've now organized enough of themselves so that I can put on the class in LA.

It will happen 2 days before "Beyond Structure" -- on Thursday, May 1 - and run from 9:30am to 7:45pm, like "Beyond Structure."

It probably won't be held in L.A. for another six years.

Location

Please see the information at the very top of this page.

Why "Part 2" isn't being offered in New York

There was no space at the venue where we're holding "Beyond Structure" in New York, and we couldn't find a suitable location nearby.

Price of Part 2

Below are the various prices for "Beyond Structure" and "Beyond Structure - Part 2"

Note: If you qualify for two discounts, for instance a "half off" discount because you're repeating "Beyond Structure" (in which case you'd pay $210 total), and a $100 fly-in discount, you can only take the largest discount, not both. (In this case, it would be the "repeat student" discount.)

The fee if you are taking:

1. "Beyond Structure": $425
2. Flying in to take "Beyond Structure" ($100 discount): $325
3. "Beyond Structure" for the second time: $210
4. "Part 2" by itself: $210
5. "Part 2" by itself, but you're Flying in to take it ($50 discount): $160
6. "Beyond Structure" for the first time ($425), plus "Part 2". (You get a $40 discount off Part 2, making it $170 instead of $210. $425 plus $170 = $595) $595
7. The same as the above, but you're flying in: $495
8. If you're already signed up "Beyond Structure" on May 1-2, and are now adding Part 2. (You get a $40 discount off of the $210 price, for a total of $170. We'll need your credit card again on this form.) $170
9. "Beyond Structure" for the SECOND time ($210), plus "Part 2". (You get a $40 discount off Part 2, making it $170 instead of $210. $210 plus $170 = $380) $380

In Conclusion

It truly will be years from now before this material is ever offered in Los Angeles again. We do hope you'll join us.

Where to stay

The hotel where "Part 2" is being held gave us a price of $169 per night. Often you can get better prices on the internet through a hotel's own website, or through travel websites like travelocity, hotels.com, expedia, priceline, etc.

"Beyond Structure" is being held on May 3-4, two days later, at the Westin Hotel, just a few minutes away by cab. They're extending their $135 rate (before taxes) for Wed. and Thurs., April 30 and May 1. Of course, they were already offering it on May 2-4, but only limited rooms are available, so reserve soon if you're interested.

If you get quoted a higher rate than that for April 30 or May 1, call Rochelle in Sales and Catering at (310) 417-4512.
